| Gate Beats is a video on the movement and flow of New York City, people moving with and against the streets and traffic. Recently, the video Venetian Red, also using music by Neil, took a look at movment and rhythm in Venice. By Neil Rolnick about the track Gate Beats - "In 2002 I wrote a tune for my improvisational band, Fish Love That, called No War Blues. It did not successfully divert the US from attacking Iraq, but it was a good tune. I had sampled three of the band members playing the tune. They are Todd Reynolds on violin, Andrew Sterman on tenor sax, and Ron Horton on trumpet. For a performance in 2003, I thought about what else I could do with those samples to make a new piece. It's basically a very simple process: I have trimmed up and looped a number of versions of each of the samples, as well as recording and editing a number of rhythmic samples. They present a variety of changing and morphing meters and patterns. In performance, I slowly lower a noise gate on each of the samples as it appears. In effect, I am creating new patterns as only the loudest notes of each sample appears, with the rest of the sample filling out the loop as the gate is lowered. In the end, the whole tune comes out of the gate for a few circuits around the track." Back to the Neil Rolnick main page. |
